Women facing challenges February 8, 2012
Debbie Johnson , The CasketGive a Day is a grassroots response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. It challenges each Canadian to recognize World AIDS Day (December 1) by giving one day’s pay to an organization that will use the money well in the fight against HIV. Give a Day runs workplace and community campaigns in Canada encouraging donations to two recipient organizations — the Stephen Lewis Foundation and Dignitas International. The money donated from Canadian communities goes to communities in Africa where the resources enable effective, local solutions.
You can participate in Give a Day by giving an individual donation, or you can join with your friends, family and co-workers and start your own Give a Day campaign or host a Give a Day Harambee (a party with a purpose). The Give a Day website provides ideas and tips on how to start a workplace campaign or host a Harambee, and features resources such as downloadable posters, brochures and tribute postcards. Please visit giveaday.ca for more information.
Or you can donate by mailing a cheque or money order made payable to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to the address below. Please ensure that your name, address and phone number are included with your donation so that we can send you a tax receipt. Or you can complete this donation form to send in with your gift. If you’re participating in a workplace giving campaign, please be sure to include the name of your group with your donation.

To calculate a day’s pay, divide your annual pay (pre-tax or after tax – it’s up to you) by 210 – the number of working days in a year. Although the campaign suggests giving a day’s pay, it is up to you to give what you are able: a half-day, a few hours, a week’s pay. Whatever you are able to give – it will make a difference.
I envision the year when every Canadian will see December 1, World AIDS Day, as a day when they work not for themselves but for the broader human family. On that day, each Canadian will give up their income to help combat HIV infection around the globe. Surely we can each give up one day a year for those who battle courageously each day of their lives to see their families survive and thrive.
