The Valentine Pledge Campaign 2007 originated from the need for the newly formed One World Grannies (OWG) to find a way to raise a significant amount of money quickly and easily. The group had met a few times and was inspired to work on key advocacy issues as well as to raise funds to support the Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. While members felt that it would take time to organize events that would generate substantial contributions, they also wanted to send some funds soon. The Valentine Pledge Campaign allowed OWGs to do just that.
In early January, a call letter went out asking members to make a financial pledge declaring their commitment to a donation. Based on the premise that $10.00 a month, or $120.00 per year, would be a reasonable start, the members were asked to make a commitment to send in a cheque for this amount. Members were asked to make their pledge by February 14th, Valentine’s Day and to submit their donations by the end of the month. Many members met and surpassed this pledge amount. In a relatively short time, with only a few email reminders, the group raised $ 3,270.00.
Members were invited to date their cheque February 14th to mark the symbolism of the gesture. While many in the group planned to make a contribution that would go beyond cash, this initial amount was a heartfelt gesture to express their concern for the grandmothers of
The campaign will continue among the membership each year and already plans have been made to reach beyond the OWG group and to suggest that in lieu of chocolates or flowers on Valentine’s Day, a donation be made to the SLF in the name of a loved one.
All cheques were made out to the Stephen Lewis Foundation and sent to the Foundation by OWGs treasurer, accompanied by a covering letter which clearly stated the funds were dedicated to the Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign.
This initiative is an easy way for start up groups to feel they have made a contribution. Some administrative glitches were easily sorted out and the campaign ran smoothly. A call letter for 2008 has been developed and can be adjusted by the groups as can the donation letter. All materials should be vetted by SLF if there are significant changes.
