Back to Shared Ideas

In mid October we held our first annual “Artists for Action” fundraiser for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. It was a great success! The enthusiasm was such that we are already planning the second one. It began with a simple idea and grew….as many good ideas do. One just has to mention the Foundation and people are very willing to come on board.

After hearing Stephen Lewis speak my husband, Keith and I knew we had to do something to help. Artist friends Bea Quarrie, Nan Sidler and Pat Parnall stepped up immediately to lend their support.

We had a 3 fold mission: to raise awareness for the Foundation, to raise funds for the Foundation and to show how grassroots organizations can support each other in Canada and Africa.

We began by spreading the word that we were having an “art viewing and sale” in our home. We contacted by email all the groups and individuals that we knew. We also put an announcement in the newspaper and through various organizations. With the help of friends we moved some of our furniture into the garage and removed our own art. In one day the artists transformed our home into a gallery. People contributed delicious appetizers and wine and in no time we were set. We simply started the Foundation videos, opened the doors and the party began.

It was a wonderful community event. There was no fee... just an opportunity for people to donate and that they did. In one afternoon we raised over $3200. The funds are still coming in as are inquiries about how people can learn more about the Foundation. I heartily encourage other groups to consider this event for themselves. As well as raising funds and awareness it built community and supported local artists.

Communities supporting communities. Artists supporting artists. We all can make a difference.

Please feel free to contact me if I can help at all.
